PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian actress has landed a role on the popular American television series, 'Gotham'.

Kuala Lumpur-born Shiva Kalaiselvan (pic), who is now based in New York, has been cast as Lelia, a recurring character in the show.

She made her debut on March 29 in the episode 'A Dark Knight: One of my Three Soups'.

"I'm the leader of the female contingent of the League of Shadows. Rules and loyalty are big for her. She is someone that holds true to the teachings of the League and stands by them no matter what," Shiva, 34, said about her character in an e-mail interview.

The League of Shadows are a group of assassins featured on Gotham, a television series that tells the stories of several characters from the 'Batman' comic series.

Asked how she felt, Shiva said the experience was surreal, as she had always wanted to be on the show.

"I don't exactly know what I would call the feeling. It's more than happy or joyous. You dream of opportunities like this in this business, and you have an idea of what it is going to be like when you get it. But it's more than that. I couldn't have imagined this experience," she said.

Her experience on Gotham, she said, had been amazing.

"I did get to meet most of the cast – either through working on scenes with them or while we were getting our hair or makeup done. Everyone was AMAZING! Incredibly friendly and welcoming," Shiva said.

While in Malaysia, she appeared in several local theatre plays, including 'After Juliet', 'Indicinelive IV' and 'Malaysian Girls'.

KUALA LUMPUR: A man in Ipoh has learned the hard way that when you refuel your car, you HAVE to cut the engine first.

CCTV footage recently emerged on social media of an incident at an Ipoh petrol station which could have had far more “explosive” consequences.

The now-viral video opens with a car pulling up to a gas dispenser and two men exiting the vehicle – one to fill the petrol, the other, presumably, to make payment.

The second man returns from the cashier and begins chatting with his friend, who casually inserts the petrol spout into the tank filler.

Suddenly, the petrol nozzle and tank filler burst into flames.

Out of reflex, both men leap backwards. After a pause, the first man reaches forward and pulls the nozzle out of the filler.
This proves to be a mistake, as the pump is still discharging petrol. The act splashes petrol all over the ground, the fuel dispenser and the second man, who is briefly on fire.

Both men flee from the conflagration in panic, and the station appears deserted for several seconds. The fire almost dies out before station employees appear en masse with fire extinguishers and put out the remaining flames in a cloud of foam.

No serious injuries were reported.

According to reports, the fire is believed to have started because the car’s engine was still running while it was being filled up with petrol. – SAYS.COM

The Kremlin studying United States broadcasters move to take Russia's RT TV channel off the air

Kremlin queries legality of decision to take RT TV channel off air in Washington

WORLD

Friday, 30 Mar 20187:03 PM MYT

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Kremlin said on Friday it was studying a move by cable and digital TV providers in the United States to take Russia's RT TV channel off the air in Washington, saying the move looked illegal and discriminatory.

U.S. intelligence agencies have called Kremlin-backed RT "Russia's state-run propaganda machine" and accused it of contributing to Moscow's campaign to interfere with the 2016 U.S. presidential election, something Russia denies.

The U.S. Department of Justice forced RT to register as "a foreign agent" in November last year, a designation that requires it to disclose financial information.

Margarita Simonyan, RT's editor-in-chief, said on Thursday evening on social media that the channel was being "kicked off the air" in Washington because of its status as "a foreign agent."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a conference call with reporters on Friday that lawyers were examining the case.

"These cable providers announced that they won't provide their services to RT," said Peskov. "Lawyers are examining the details, but as of now and at first glance it looks like a groundless decision."

Peskov said the Kremlin was deeply concerned about how Russian media were being treated in the United States.

"It's a very worrying tendency," he said. "They are demonstrating a discriminatory policy towards the media in the U.S., which probably breaks the law and contradicts all these statements about freedom of speech which we hear day and night from Washington."

High Court sends father, son to jail for concealing terror-related information

KUALA LUMPUR: The atmosphere at the High Court here today was sombre as a man and his son were sentenced to 12 months in jail for intentional omission of information regarding a terrorist act last year.

Ahmad Omar, 52, could not hold back his tears while in the dock when judge Datuk Azman Abdullah meted out the sentence, after he and his son, Jaffar Ahmad, 26, pleaded guilty to the offence.

Ahmad’s family, who sat in the public gallery, also burst into tears when he pleaded for a lenient sentence.

The father of six told the court that he is the sole breadwinner of his family.

"I am very remorseful over my crime and promise not to repeat the same mistake," he said in between sobs.

Ahmad and Jaffar were charged with intentionally omitting information regarding a terrorist act which took place at MAG-03, Persiaran Pangsa Baiduri, Taman Desa Baiduri, Cheras, between 2009 and Aug 30 last year.

They were allegedly protecting the identity of Hajar Abdul Mubin, 25, who joined the Abu Sayyaf militant group in 2011.

The offence falls under Section 130M of the Penal Code, which provides for seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

In his judgement, Azman said that omitting information on someone who was deemed a criminal was a serious offence, as it could encourage others to commit crime.

"You should not protect them and give them a job, while knowing that (they are) high on police’s wanted list.

"I hope you will change after serving your jail sentence," he added.

The court also ordered the duo’s jail sentence to run from the date of their arrest on Aug 30.

Deputy public prosecutor Faida Mohd Rasidee pressed for a deterrent sentence, stating that the case involved the public interest. © New Straits Times Press

PH parties “still have a chance” to win over voters in three-cornered fights after redelineation

Rafizi: Pakatan still has chance to win, despite redelineation

KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 — The Pakatan Harapan (PH) pact may yet take federal power in GE14 despite allegations of engineered seats in the newly gazetted redelineation report, according to PKR strategist Rafizi Ramli.

The Pandan MP said that although the newly redrawn electoral boundaries favour the Barisan Nasional (BN), PH parties “still have a chance” to win over voters in three-cornered fights with PAS as the Malay vote would be diluted in constituencies that are more racially mixed.

“There are some areas designated for BN. This we have to admit and we can’t do anything about but there are also other constituencies with mixed voters.

“Previously when it was a straight fight, the Malay votes at these places would only go to either BN or Opposition but now with PAS in the picture, the Malay votes are diluted.

“This means we still have a chance at scoring some of those votes,” he said in his speech during last night’s Lembah Pantai PH fundraising dinner at the SJK(C) Chung Kwo here.

He named Lembah Pantai as an example of a mixed constituency where PH has a fighting chance to win.

Other PH leaders and election hopefuls who attended the fundraiser told some 400-over supporters that the gazetted redelineation exercise would severely impact the seats currently occupied by its members.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil who was named the “best candidate” for Lembah Pantai by its incumbent Nurul Izzah Anwar, highlighted the inclusion of Bukit Aman to the parliamentary seat and the removal of Brickfields from the constituency.

“Lembah Pantai today is not the Lembah Pantai we used to know. So much has changed.

“After the redelineation motion was passed, the nett result is an additional 800 voters but when you really look at it, at least 10,000 police votes are now added in.

“We know nothing about Bukit Aman, and the Brickfields community that we grew to love over the years, is no longer with us,” he said in his speech.

Fahmi said the exercise caused the voter demographics in Lembah Pantai to change from 56 per cent Malay, 22 per cent Chinese and 19 per cent Indian to 62 per cent Malay, 19 per cent Chinese and 16 per cent Indian.

“There is an increase of about 6 per cent Malay voters and reduction of Chinese and Indian voters by 3 per cent respectively.

“The figure looks small but the impact is significant especially when we are trying to win votes,” he said.

Fahmi said the decision to include Bukit Aman into the Lembah Pantai constituency was unconstitutional as the districts were geographically split.

“Physically, one would have to exit Lembah Pantai, go into Segambut, Jalan Semantan and Jalan Duta to get there. That is passing through Lim Lip Eng’s area.

“Or the other way is by exiting Lembah Pantai and bypassing Bukit Bintang, which is a whole other different constituency. It just does not make sense,” he said.

Fahmi said the Election Commission (EC) had failed to do justice to the redelineation exercise as evident in the disproportionate number of voters between the smallest and largest constituencies in a particular state.

Former Bersih 2.0 chair Maria Chin Abdullah, who will be contesting on PKR ticket this GE14, echoed the same sentiment.

“The impacts are severe to us. Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua will now have to do a lot more work since he has over 150,000 voters to look after in a new constituency named Damansara.

“In Subang, or what is now called Sg Buloh, Sivarasa Rasiah may even lose his seat because the new voting boundaries see a different demographics involving more Malay voters,” she said.

Other critics, including electoral watchdogs have said the EC’s recommendations would give an unfair advantage to the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition. The EC has denied such claims.

PETALING JAYA, March 30 ― Two police officers went to Bersih 2.0’s office here today to record statements over the polls watchdog’s protest against the Election Commission’s (EC) redelineation report outside Parliament.

Bersih executive director Yap Swee Seng, who was at the office, said two personnel ― one in uniform and one in plainclothes ― arrived at the office at about 10am, seeking to record statements from him, Bersih 2.0 acting chairman Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari, secretariat member Mandeep Singh and Suaram coordinator Amir Abd Hadi.

He said the uniformed personnel introduced himself as ASP Adnan.

Yap said they were informed that they are investigated under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012. The Act criminalises the failure to give a 10-day notice to the police before a gathering.

“It was pertaining the police permit of the rally,” he told the Malay Mail when contacted.

“There is a procedure to record statements, not just appearing at our office without prior notice and without our lawyer present,” he added.

Lawyer Eric Paulsen came and spoke to the police before it was decided that all four of them will go to Dang Wangi police station to record their statements on a date that is yet to be decided.

Yap said the two personnel left the office about 11am after taking down Yap’s particulars.

“We condemn such a move by the police when we have always cooperated in any investigations. There was no need to turn up at our office like this,” he said, confirming that no documents or items were seized from the office.

On Wednesday, hundreds rallied outside the Parliament building against the tabling of the redelineation report in the Dewan Rakyat. The EC’s controversial proposal on the redrawing of electoral boundaries was passed the same day after less than three hours of debate.

Bersih 2.0 also submitted a memorandum on the redelineation report to Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.

The EC’s proposed new voting boundaries came into effect yesterday after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong gave his assent.

No redelineation for Penang?

GEORGE TOWN, March 30 ― Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng accused today the Election Commission (EC) of having failed in its duty by leaving out the island state from its newly gazetted redelineation exercise.

Lim who is also DAP secretary-general asserted that some of the electoral constituencies in Penang were disproportionate in size and needed correcting, but which the EC had ignored.

“There was no redelineation at all in Penang except for minor changes in Balik Pulau that does not affect voters and Kepala Batas that affects only 100 to 200 voters,” he told a news conference at his office here.

The redelineation report was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the Dewan Rakyat two days ago and passed the same day. It was gazetted yesterday, after the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong gave his royal assent.

“It is compulsory for the EC to conduct redelineation exercise for all constituencies and yet this was done for Penang so EC did not do its job,” Lim said.

The Air Putih assemblyman said that his state constituency used to have about 14,000 voters, but the recent electoral roll showed a drop in numbers to 12,752.

“My voters have reduced despite [an] increase in residents, while in the next constituency, Paya Terubong, it has over 41,000 voters which is disproportionate to my constituency,” he said, adding that it went against the value concept of one voter, one vote.

Lim who is also Bagan MP said the redelineation report is racially divisive, which he claimed to be against the idea of a multiracial society in Malaysia.

“If we look at the recommendations in the report, non-Malay voters are grouped in one constituency while Malay voters are grouped in another constituency,” he said.

He insisted that the divisions were to reduce the chances of Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidates winning some seats.

“We will see if their plan to reduce PH’s number of seats will happen in the elections,” he said.

Lim also demanded explanations from MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Gerakan president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong for supporting the motion to table the redelineation report.

“They had verbally opposed the redelineation report and yet when the time comes in Dewan Rakyat, they raised their hands to support,” he said.

The motion on the redelineation was passed with a 129 votes for and 80 votes against.

Several states such as Selangor, Perak and Johor, were affected by the redelineation.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 — Incumbent Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar has challenged Umno hopeful Datuk Seri Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin to a direct contest for the seat, which she may not be defending in the GE14.

The 37-year-old, once known as PKR’s “princess”, threw down the gauntlet during the Lembah Pantai Pakatan Harapan (PH) fundraising dinner at SJK (C) Chung Kwo here last night, in the latest verbal spat through the media in recent weeks.

“If you are so present in the area and you can help solve all the Lembah Pantai people’s problems, that is really great but do it fairly.

“Accord me the same assistance and remove all the 7,800 postal votes and we fight man to man,” she said.

Despite being bested by Nurul Izzah in the Election 2013, Raja Nong Chik has regularly visited the urban parliamentary seat that also has a significant percentage of urban poor living in high-rises and provided his aid.

Some residents have said they see Raja Nong Chik more often than the incumbent MP.

However, Nurul Izzah denied neglecting Lembah Pantai constituents and insisted she has tried her best with her limited resources.

“We do what we can. We have a running office which is open five days a week, we have tuition centres which have been operating for five years now and we have the food stamp programme.

“Maybe if I did not have to spend a lot of time axing big scale projects like Taman Rimba Kiara and received the rightful allocation as an MP, I could have done more for the people,” she said.

Nurul Izzah added that she was irked by the Barisan Nasional’s (BN) allegations of irresponsibility against federal Opposition MPs, asserting that the ruling coalition held an unfair advantage.

“For instance, how is it that an Umno division chief gets more leeway and allowed to use City Hall’s resources, but the MP is denied all of these?” she asked.

“Whenever I do something for the people, I don’t go around making public announcements because that is what is expected of me as a wakil rakyat,” she said.

The PH pact managed to raise some RM20,000 during the dinner last night, though attendance was not 100 per cent.

There were 70 tables, which can seat 10 diners each, but there were a number of unoccupied seats scattered throughout the school hall.

New Straits Times29 March 2018

KUALA LUMPUR: A married couple being hunted for allegedly masterminding a foreign exchange investment or forex cheating syndicate were arrested at the KL International Airport 2 (KLIA2) on Monday.

Bukit Aman Commercial CID director Datuk Seri Amar Singh Ishar Singh said 56-year-old man and his 55-year-old wife were detained upon their return after leaving for a neighbouring country on Feb 11.

He said so far the police had arrested five main suspects from the syndicate including three men who were arrested on Feb 10.

“The syndicate is believed to have started in 2013 until August 2016, and an estimated 70,000 people have fallen victims,” he said at a media conference here today.

According to him, police also seized RM10.4 million worth of properties including semi detached houses, a condominium, a shop lot and two factory lots belonging to the couple. In addition, police also seized eight luxury cars including Mercedes Benz, Porsche Cayenne, BMW and Audi as well as 50 watches of different brands which were estimated to be valued at RM12 million.

On Feb 10, police detained three individuals on suspicion of involvement in the syndicate involving a loss of almost RM1 billion.

The suspects duped the victims into participating in investments under the foreign exchange concept and pulled the wool over their eyes by holding seminars in hotels, offering a 12 per cent monthly profit, using companies registered under the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) and involving organisers or higher management figures with titles of ‘Datuk’. -- BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang defiantly attended the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday despite a six-month suspension issued to him on Wednesday (March 28).

The Gelang Patah MP was seen sitting inside the august House during the proceedings even as Datuk Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (BN-Setiu) raised a point of order to alert the Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.

“Tan Sri Speaker, according to the Standing Order, a member who has been suspended cannot take part in the proceedings until their suspension period is over.

“But I see Gelang Patah is still here. He is a senior member and should know better.

“I hope action will be taken against him,” Che Mohamad said.

To this, Pandikar Amin coolly said that he could not “see” Lim in the Dewan.

This started a commotion as several lawmakers accused Che Mohamad of kicking up a ruckus to “keep his position” as a lawmaker.

Che Mohamad instead said that he was merely following the rules of the Dewan Rakyat.

“This is the problem with the Opposition, you cannot accept reality,” he argued.

Pandikar Amin, who remained calm, allowed the commotion to go on for several minutes before stepping in.

He said that he was “listening to” the MPs’ arguments.

“This is your Parliament. Even if I say anything, no one listens. So you do as you like.

“I said I didn’t see Gelang Patah because even if I instruct him out again, what is the point?” he said.

Lim was suspended for six months by Pandikar Amin on Wednesday as the former refused to obey instructions and interrupted the House proceedings.

But even on Wednesday after the suspension, Lim continued to be present in the House, refusing to leave his seat.

SHAH ALAM: The High Court here reversed the punishment meted out by the Sessions Court to a woman, described as a “Datin”, who had physically abused her maid.

Rozita Mohamad Ali, 44, will now have to serve an eight-year jail sentence for causing grievous hurt to her domestic helper Suyanti Sutrinso, 21, at a house in Mutiara Damansara on June 21, 2016.

Judicial Commissioner Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah also rejected the defence counsel's plea for a stay of execution and ordered Rozita to serve her sentence beginning Thursday (March 29).

Rozita's defence counsel Haniff Khatri Abdulla said his client was willing to have her passport impounded and to adhere to any other additional conditions imposed.

Dressed in black from head to toe, Rozita appeared calm and had an in-depth discussion with her platoon of lawyers led by Haniff Khatri.

Before she was handcuffed and led out of the court, she pinned part of her headscarf to cover the lower part of her face.

Rozita was initially charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code with attempted murder, which was later amended to Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means.

She had pleaded guilty to the charge.

She had used a kitchen knife, a steel mop and an umbrella to attack her maid Suyanti at a house in Mutiara Damansara on June 21, 2016.

She was bound over for five years on a good behaviour bond of RM20,000 on March 15 by Sessions Court judge Mohammed Mokhzani Mokhtar.

However, the lenient sentence was criticised by members of the public who demanded she be duly dealt with for abusing Suyanti.

PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission's (EC) proposed redelineation will alter the size of many of the 98 affected parliament seats in terms of their number of voters.

The Petaling Jaya Utara seat, which the proposal will rename to Damansara, will see the biggest growth in terms of the percentage change in the number of voters.

The seat had 85,401 voters in the last general election in 2013 and will grow by 76.16% to 150,439 voters as of 2016 when the EC study was done.

The other Parliament seats which will see the most growth are Petaling Jaya Selatan, renamed Petaling Jaya, which will increase by 62.6%; Beruas (55.05%); Klang (40.33%); and Bukit Bintang (30.99%).

All the seats above are currently held by the Opposition.

In total, 61 of the 98 affected Parliament seats will see a growth in the number of voters, while 37 seats will shrink in terms of the numbers of voters compared with the 2013 general election.

The seat that will be most affected is the Subang seat (which is set to be renamed to Sungai Buloh), which will shrink by 42.86% or from 128,543 voters to 73,448 voters.

Other seats that will also shrink significantly are Hulu Langat (-34.86%), Lumut (-29.72%), Kapar (-26.38%), and Puchong (-22.72%).

These seats are also currently held by the Opposition.

Overall, of the 98 seats that will see changes, 36 were won in 2013 by Barisan while 62 were won by the Opposition.

A Chinese tycoon who paid for hundreds of luxury homes to be built for the residents of his hometown has been left dumbfounded by their greed and ingratitude, according to a local newspaper report.

Chen Sheng, the founder and chairman of drinks company Tiandi No 1 Beverage Inc, put up 200 million yuan (US$31.9 million) for the construction of 258 luxury villas on land provided by local authorities in the village of Guanhu, Guangdong province, five years ago, Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

Each property covers 280 square metres, has five bedrooms, two reception rooms, a garage and a small garden. The development also features a stream with a bridge over it, basketball and badminton courts, and even a stage for hosting traditional operas.

The report did not say how the properties had initially been allocated, but Chen was quoted as saying that he based the number required on a 2013 census, which said there were 190 households in the village.

Despite there being an oversupply of almost 70 homes, in the years that followed the announcement of the plan, more and more people came forward staking claims to them, with several villagers saying they needed more than one to accommodate their growing families.

The villagers’ reaction to his magnanimous gesture left Chen disheartened.

“As soon as I went back to the village, everyone started making all kinds of demands,” he said. “So I don’t go back any more.”

The report said he has not been back to Guanhu for two years.

In an earlier report, Chen was quoted as saying that as well as building the villas, he would also plant lychee orchards and a large pig farm close to the development to create more than 100 jobs for the community.

The businessman and benefactor even said that the meat processing company he owned would buy the pigs reared on the farm, guaranteeing a market for them.

“Within four years, the villagers’ average income will be 200,000 yuan a year, so they won’t have to worry about houses or their children’s education,” he said.

The report said that the village committee will hold a meeting of all residents in a bid to find a way forward for the project.

: The Election Commission’s (EC) report on the constituency redelineation will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat today after the powerful speaker declared it not to be sub judice

EC redelineation report to be tabled in Parliament today

Wednesday, 28 Mar 2018

KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission’s (EC) report on the constituency redelineation will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat today despite claims by opposition lawmakers that it would be sub judice (under judicial consideration and thus prohibited from public discussion elsewhere) to do so.

Two law experts also said tabling the report could be sub judice due to the ongoing court cases, but it was also a grey area.

“This is one of those majestic areas where no clear law exists and the judge has a wide choice.

“Judicial wisdom and discretion will have to find the right answer,” Prof Datuk Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi said.

As such, he said, the respective bodies should continue to carry out their duties.

“Sub judice is applicable in certain cases. If sub judice is applicable in cases like this, that means the Dewan Rakyat can’t do anything,” he told reporters in Parliament yesterday.

He said the motion on the redelineation would be tabled in Parliament, adding that either the Prime Minister or any Cabinet minister could bring the motion in the House.

Recently, 107 notices of objections were filed by the people in Selangor, along with electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0, which filed a judicial review application to challenge the EC’s redelineation recommendations.

The Penang government also filed a motion at the Federal Court on March 16 for leave to appeal against the EC’s recommendations.

Yesterday, Klang DAP MP Charles Santiago requested an injunction at the Shah Alam High Court to stop Padikar Amin from allowing the tabling and debate of the report in Parliament today.

Santiago said that given the court cases were contested in two different courts, it would be sub judice for the Speaker to allow for a debate.

“It will be a travesty of justice if the courts rule that the EC was wrong in not holding an inquiry before submitting the report to the Prime Minister.

“Such a decision would make the redelineation report invalid and we would be debating an invalid report,” he said.

Santiago hoped the Court would grant him an order today.

Dr Shad said the situation was a grey area, adding that it was regarded as a constitutional dilemma and a “Gordian Knot” which the judge would have to unravel.

He explained that the existing practice is that if something is sub judice, then the matter is not commented upon in Parliament.

“But one must remember that the sub judice rule relating to parliamentary discussion is based on the Standing Orders of the House (Parliament), of which the House is the master,” he added.

He also cited the Datuk Tawfik Ismail case as a precedent, where the court declined to throw out his complaint relating to RU355 and instead asked both parties to make their submissions for judicial consideration.

“If the rule of sub judice should apply and the judicial process of appeals must be exhausted, then the matter could be delayed by years,” said Dr Shad.

Lawyers for Liberty executive director Eric Paulsen said the redelineation report should be withdrawn as there were genuine objections and legal challenges against the exercise.

“There are genuine objections of gerrymandering and malapportionment, that the redelineation was wrongfully done in violation of the Constitution,” he said.

Paulsen pointed out that Pandikar Amin applied the sub judice principle to stop any discussion in Parliament on the US Department of Justice’s legal action on alleged misappropriation of 1Malaysia Development Bhd funds.

PETALING JAYA: Hilal El-Helwe scored a 93rd minute winner to hand Malaysia a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat in their last Asian Cup qualifying match.

Muhd Syafiq Ahmad headed in Nazmi Faiz's corner kick in the 72th minute to cancel out Lebanon captain Hassan Maatouk's first half opener as the visitors looks to hold out for a draw at the Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium in Beirut on Tuesday.

Hassan had earlier put the home side in front when he converted the spot kick in the 18th minute after he was brought down by Matthew Davis in the box.

Tan Cheng Hoe's side then defended valiantly in the final quarter of the game and looked all set to snatch a morale-boosting draw from their more illustrious rivals but was denied by Hilal's stoppage time strike.

WIth the defeat, Malaysia ended their campaign with only a point to show following a 1-1 draw against Hong Kong in September last year.

Lebanon emerged the Group B champions with 16 points, five ahead of second-placed North Korea, who beat Hong Kong 2-0 at home in the other fixture. Hong Kong were third with five points.

It was nevertheless still a commendable result for the national team, who traveled to Beirut without a full-strength squad after Cheng Hoe omitted 12 Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) players a day after Malaysia drew 2-2 with Mongolia on March 22.

Ironically, Syafiq and Nazmi, the two JDT players that rejoined the squad having earlier being released, were both involved in Malaysia's goals.

Malaysia who are now winless in 12 matches, welcome Bhutan in an international friendly on April 3.

James Blunt’s engaging banter kept things light-hearted and endeared him to the crowd.during his KL Concert

BY MICHAEL CHEANG

PHOTOS BY THE STAR/CHAN TAK KONG

Midway through James Blunt’s concert on Sunday night, he asked the audience to sing along to a song which “you all should know”. But it was not the song we were expecting.

“It’s not You’re Beautiful. I’m not playing that tonight. I’ve already got all your money anyway!” he teased with a laugh.

Although that is without doubt his most famous song, in truth, Blunt probably didn’t really need to sing You’re Beautiful to make his show at the Dewan Wawasan Convention and Exhibition Centre memorable.

After all, the 44-year-old British singer-songwriter has released four other albums since his 2004 best-selling debut Back To Bedlam, and though he is still best known for THAT song, it’s credit to his songwriting prowess that it was not even the most memorable one he played during the show.

No, that title actually goes to two of his newer songs from 2017’s The Afterlove– the tender, romantic Time Of Our Lives (written about his wedding day) was one of the concert’s most poignant moments, and the foot-tapping Someone Sing Along, about a certain President of the United States.

The latter yielded one of the show’s biggest laughs when Blunt told a story about how he never mentioned who the song is about when playing in the US, before imploring us not to tell any American friends who the song is about, otherwise “I won’t be able to play there again!

James Blunt’s songs were strong enough to captivate you even if you were unfamiliar with most of them.

This was a great example of what a showman Blunt is. In between serenading us with an 18-song setlist comprising songs from all his five albums, his engaging banter kept things lighthearted and really endeared him to the crowd.

Blunt’s effusive chatter gave the impression of an artiste who is comfortable in his own skin, and who is not afraid of laughing at himself. Bringing up his recent tour of the US once more, he added sheepishly that he wasn’t there for a solo tour.

“I haven’t been totally honest with you, I was the support act, to a guy called Ed Sheeran. So I was his groupie!” he quipped.

All the banter in the world wouldn’t make a great show without great music, and thankfully, Blunt has that covered as well.

From catchy tunes like Heart To Heart, 1973, and Bartender to romantic lighter – or rather, handphone-in-the-air – moments like Same Mistake and Make Me Better, his songs were strong enough to captivate you even if you were unfamiliar with most of them.

His vocal delivery was crisp as daylight, ensuring that you could pick out every single lyric he sang, and conveyed the story and emotions of each song perfectly. On the plaintive Goodbye My Lover, for instance, you could practically hear the heartache and pain in his voice as he sang each verse.

By the time he finished the show with OK (his recent hit with Robin Shultz) and a three-song encore, Blunt had proven once and for all to those inside the hall that he is far from a one-hit wonder, and that there is more to him than just You’re Beautiful.

Oh, and speaking of that song… of course he sang it eventually. And, yes, it was beautiful.

BALI: A Malaysian has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs hidden in his rectum to the resort island here.

The 23-year-old suspect, whom Indonesian authorities identified as AA, was arrested by Ngurah Rai Airport customs and excise officers on March 11 upon his arrival at the international airport via Thai AirAsia FD 396 from Bangkok.

AA was arrested along with his two Indonesian friends, identified as S, 24, and AP, 25, who also brought drugs into Bali.

The trio appeared suspicious when passing security checks at the customs desk at the airport in Bali.

"X-ray scans showed that there were suspicious things in their bodies and among their belongings," Ngurah Rai customs and excise office head Himawan Indarjono told a press conference on Monday.

Following the X-ray, the police took them to the customs and excise room for a further check, including a body search.

"Customs officers found 36.2g of methamphetamine in AA's bag. A body search yielded three small packets of methamphetamine weighing 36.25 grams, 33.73 grams and 20.73 grams respectively, hidden in his rectum," Himawan said.

A body search on S and AP also revealed drugs hidden in their rectums. Customs seized four small packets of meth, weighing 42.32 g, 44.81g, 39.66g and 38.78g from S.

Officers found four packets of meth on AP, two in her rectum and two others in her vagina. In total she was carrying about 140g of meth.

The three suspects are now facing drug charges and which carry the death penalty upon conviction. – The Jakarta Post/Asia News Network

Man gets 40 years jail and 20 lashes for raping stepdaughter in Menggatal

KOTA KINABALU: A man has been sentenced to 40 years jail and 20 strokes of the rotan for raping his stepdaughter at a house in Menggatal.

Sessions Court judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad meted out the sentence on Tuesday after the 45-year-old man pleaded guilty to two charges under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code.

The local man was sentenced to 20 years in jail and 10 strokes of the cane for raping the girl when she was 12 in December 2015.

He received another 20 years and 10 strokes for repeating the crime at the same house in February 2016.

The accused will be serving the sentences consecutively.

In mitigation, the man pleaded for a lenient sentence as it was his first offence.

His counsel PJ Pereira said he had cooperated with the police during his detention.

However, prosecuting officer Chief Inspector Lim Swee Beng, who stood in for Deputy Public Prosecutor Hafizah Zahidah Abdullah, called for severe punishment.

Lim said the accused had committed an abhorrent crime and traumatised the girl.

RM211 million 1.34 Km New Highway to ease jam in Pusat Bandar Damansara

New highway to ease jam in Pusat Bandar Damansara

TRAFFIC along the loop in Pusat Bandar Damansara is a nightmare for those accessing the central business district.

The roads in the area are often congested as they are also used by motorists travelling between Petaling Jaya, Damansara Heights, Bangsar and Kuala Lumpur city centre.

This will soon come to an end as a multi-million ringgit elevated highway project will be built from the Sprint Highway-Jalan Maarof interchange near the Pavilion Damansara Heights project to the Sprint Highway-Jalan Semantan interchange.

The three-lane elevated Jalan Damansara-Semantan Highway stretching for 1.34km will considerably improve traffic flow and provide direct connectivity to the area, benefitting thousands living and working in and around the township.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who launched the project yesterday, said the project would go a long way in easing traffic congestion there.

“Presently, traffic from Petaling Jaya and Damansara Heights coming into Bangsar (Jalan Maarof) is heavy and causes a gridlock in the area.

“Once this project is completed, it will solve the traffic problem,” he said.

Project consultant, SNA Consult Sdn Bhd director Datuk Robert Ang Huck Koon likened the area to a “hangman’s loop”.

“It was like a hangman’s loop or a big roundabout; in order to go from Petaling Jaya to Kuala Lumpur, motorists have to go through the inner roads of Jalan Batai and Jalan Johar, and likewise when they come back,” he said.

Ang explained that this type of road system only favoured the development at the site and not the surrounding township.

“That is why Pusat Bandar Damansara was not doing too well previously and businesses there were dying.

“This new traffic scheme will give better connectivity and the local residents living around the area,” he said.

Tengku Adnan said there were some objections from the community during the private engagement sessions and many were not happy.

“But my advice to the people is to be patient.

“Once the project is completed, you will be happy and realise that it is good for the community,” he said.

Tengku Adnan said WCT Sdn Bhd, which was awarded the contract, will undertake the project while the construction cost will be shared by DBKL, Pavilion and UKAS (Public-Private Partnership Unit) to ensure the project through.

The scope of work includes site clearance and demolition works, earthworks, drainage works, pavement works, construction of pedestrian walkways, installation of streetlights, reinforced earth wall and upgrading of current roads.

Traffic management plans and soil investigation work have also been carried out.

The estimated cost of the project is RM211mil and is expected to be completed by June 2020.

Damansara Heights resident Mary Chew said she was looking forward to the new highway as it would ease traffic especially during peak hours.

“I think it is about time something is done about the traffic issue here as it is getting out of hand,’’ she said.

Bangsar resident K. Sivam hoped the highway would also ease congestion in Bangsar.

“We have been forced to put up with congestion for many years now and I hope it will be solved soon,’’ he said.

Medan Damansara Residents Association secretary Norainee Kamaruddin said their main concern was traffic management plan during construction.

She said the community there was inconvenienced during construction of the MRT station nearby.

“Motorists used inner residential roads to bypass the project site, so we foresee a similar problem with this project.

“We hope they (the authorities) will include us in their traffic management plans in future.

“While it seems like a good idea, we anticipate additional traffic coming into the area,’’ she said.

Bukit Damansara House Owners Association honorary treasurer Ravi Markandu agreed with Noraini that the elevated highway would bring more traffic into the township.

“Yes, they have engaged with us to get our feedback, but the development signboard is up and this shows that they are not listening,” he said.

“Bukit Damansara is being overdeveloped. What was once a low-rise commercial development in Pusat Bandar Damansara is now being redeveloped to become a Manhattan-like commercial area with skyscrapers up to 50 storeys,’’ Ravi said.

ALOR SETAR: A man was burned to death in his car after it caught fire during a crash along the North South Expressway.

Kubang Pasu OCPD Supt Mohd Ismail Ibrahim said the victim had been driving towards Bukit Kayu Hitam, a town on the border with Thailand, at about 10am on March 26.

"A witness claimed that the car exploded and the fire spread quickly, causing the car to crash by the left side of the road," he said.

"So far we have identified the car owner as Tan Kia Sock, 71, from Taman Golf in Alor Setar. But the actual identity of the driver has yet to be determined as the body is fully burnt," added Supt Mohd Ismail.

Bukit Kayu Hitam Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohd Iqwan Ehshan said his team received a call at 10am and arrived at the scene less than 10 minutes later.

"We took about four more minutes to control the fire and the victim's corpse was extracted at about 1pm," he said.

Mohd Iqwan also denied that the fire was caused by a faulty power bank.

"The department and police are conducting our investigations, and we hope there will be no further speculation until we are done. So far, the witness informed us that the car suddenly exploded while it was on the move," he said.

SINGAPORE: After 38 years on the run, a 63-year-old man was finally taken to a Singapore court on Monday (March 26) for alleged illegal possession of a firearm.

If convicted, Seow Lam Seng can be jailed for life.

Officers from the Royal Malaysia Police arrested Seow in Penang last Thursday before he was taken to Singapore two days later.

In a statement on Sunday, the Singapore Police Force said that on Oct 3, 1980, two of their officers had spotted Seow and a man known as Lee Ah Fatt behaving suspiciously on Tanjong Katong Road and decided to conduct a check.

Seow was allegedly carrying a pistol at his waist at a staircase next to Sin Po Po Bar in Tanjong Katong Road at around 2.30pm that day.

Singapore police said in a statement on Sunday that Lee had allegedly drawn his pistol from his back trouser pocket and pointed it at the officers, resulting in one of them drawing his service revolver to shoot at him.

"Despite being shot, Lee Ah Fatt was believed to have continued to struggle with the two police officers. During the commotion, Seow Lam Seng managed to flee from the scene. Lee Ah Fatt succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital," said the police.

The police added that they have regularly reviewed the case in attempts to locate Seow.

Offenders convicted of being unlawfully in possession of a firearm can be jailed for life and receive at least six strokes of the cane. Seow cannot be caned as he is above 50 years old.

He will be remanded at Central Police Division and be back in court on April 2. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

Three MPs suspended for 10 days for insulting Speaker

KUALA LUMPUR: Three Perak DAP lawmakers have been suspended for 10 days for insulting the Dewan Rakyat Speaker and the august House.

Last week, the trio -- Nga Kor Ming (DAP-Taiping), Ngeh Khoo Ham (DAP-Beruas) and V. Sivakumar (DAP-Batu Gajah) -- were issued letters demanding an apology for disparaging the Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia and the House.

However the three lawmakers refused to do so and instead filed a motion to discuss if preventing motions and questions on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) was tantamount to contempt of Parliament.

"I would like to remind that taking inappropriate statements in the media and refusing to apologise is an act of insulting the Dewan Rakyat and the Speaker.

"As such, I am instructing Beruas, Taiping and Batu Gajah to leave the august Hall for 10 days starting today," said Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee on Monday.

On March 6, the three lawmakers accused Pandikar Amin of colluding with the ruling party to cover up corruption scandals when he did not allow their applications or emergency motions to debate the seizure of a super-yacht in Indonesia and questions related to 1MDB.

The following day, Pandikar Amin gave the trio a dressing-down for constantly challenging his discretionary powers to reject their motions.
