Pahang Regent Expresses Disappointment Over Mahfuz Insulting Sultan

Pic: NSTPKUANTAN: The Regent of Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah today expressed his disappointment over Pokok Sena Member of Parliament Datuk Mahfuz Omar's action of insulting Sultan Ahmad Shah during a recent political talk.

He said the politician should know his limits and needed to respect an elderly person especially when it involves a Sultan.

" I am upset over the member of parliament's action, who did not show respect towards someone who is much older than him. I do not wish to speak further as many people have commented about it.

"However, based on what he spoke, he (Mahfuz) went against the culture of the Muslim community....as a Muslim we have been always taught to respect the elderly especially a Sultan....since he is much younger than my father," he told reporters after visiting three homes which were razed in a fire at Taman Sungai Isap 2 here.

Tengku Abdullah said he believed the police were investigating the MP especially after receiving several police reports.

"I leave it to the authorities to conduct investigations....several reports were lodged by various organisations including non-governmental organisations and the palace.

"Besides the statement by the politician, I am angry and offended by a video recorded by the palace and will take action against those responsible for it," he said.

Last week a video of Sultan Ahmad Shah resting on his bed during his birthday celebration had gone viral on social media.

Mahfuz was captured on video speaking on the health of the ruler and the clip subsequently went viral.

Meanwhile, Pekan division Umno today lodged a police report demanding that Mahfuz should seek permission from the palace for an audience with Sultan Ahmad Shah over his recent statement.

Its secretary Datuk Ahmad Azmey Abu Talib said the politician should personally meet the ruler and apologise for comparing Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the Pahang Sultan.

"Only a face to face meeting between Mahfuz and Sultan Ahmad Shah will be able to sort out the matter. We believe that seeking an apology through other channels will not be sufficient.

"As people living in Pekan which is also the royal town, all of us are upset with Mahfuz's action for not showing respect towards the royal institution especially Sultan Ahmad Shah," he said, adding they will only accept Mahfuz's apology if the Sultan himself decides to accept it.

Ahmad Azmey also urged Mahfuz to be investigated under the Sedition Act as it will serve as a reminder for politicians not to challenge the royal institution in future.

Also present was Pekan division MCA chief Datuk Yeo Boon Geok along with representatives from MIC and MyPPP.
