Worker persuades woman to hand over baby born in petrol station toilet
BALING: An alert petrol station worker sensed something was amiss when she heard the cry of a newborn baby, followed by the sight of a woman exiting the toilet clutching something tightly to her chest.
Nurul Shuhada Mat Shukri, 25, said she heard the cries of a newborn baby at about 2.15pm on Saturday (Dec 2) at the petrol service station where she works here.
She then noticed a woman, aged in her 30s, leaving the female toilet carrying something wrapped in a piece of cloth.
"Suddenly, I heard the cry of a baby. My instincts told me that the woman had just delivered a baby in the toilet of the petrol station.
She said that the woman was angry and scolded her initially, but later relented and agreed to Nurul's request.
"She told me to take good care of the baby and that she would return to see the child every month.
"After she handed over her newborn baby to me, she hurriedly left in a car heading to Kupang," Nurul said on Sunday.
Nurul said she lodged a police report over the incident and the baby was sent to the Baling Hospital.
Baling OCPD Supt Shariffuddin Yusuf confirmed that a report had been received on the incident.
He said the child was under the care of the Baling Hospital and the woman who allegedly abandoned the child was being traced.
He said the case would be investigated under Section 317 of Penal Code for exposure and abandonment of a child under 12, which carries a jail term of up to seven years, a fine, or both.
Baling district welfare officer Shamsul Izrin Isahak said the Welfare Department would obtain a temporary protection order from the Baling Sessions Court over the baby.
