KANGAR: A 29-year-old contractor was sentenced to 20 months' jail by the magistrate's court today for criminal intimidation against a shariah lawyer last week.

Mohamad Hafizh Azwan, who was clad in blue t-shirt, pleaded guilty to sending threatening text messages to Syahirah Abdul Ghani at a lawyer's office at Jalan Serunai here from 10.22pm on Sept 5 and 4pm on Sept 6.

Magistrate Mohd Azhar Hamzah ordered the sentence to run from the date of arrest on Sept 7.

The accused, who was unrepresented, appealed for light sentence while deputy public prosecutor Nur Nisla Abd Latif suggested a deterrent sentence as the accused had obstructed the victim’s duty as a legal officer.

Meanwhile, the victim in her witness impact statement said she feared for her safety as well as the safety of her family following the repeated threats.

Appealing for a heavy sentence, she said the accused had found her workplace and had threatened to find her house. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
