JOHOR BARU: Two company directors and an electronics equipment dealer were charged at the Sessions Court with illegal possession of more than 4,000 unauthorised units of digital Set Top Box (STB) decoders seized from their business premises last year.

Theu Boon Ooi, 57, and Noel Theu Ke Wei, 33, who are directors at Meck Marketing Sdn Bhd claimed trial to a joint charge of illegal possession of 4,540 units of STB decoders, which are used for high-definition satellite broadcast services.

The items were seized from their business premises in Taman Perindustrian Plentong during a raid conducted by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at about 3pm on Dec 6 last year.

Under Section 244(1) of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1998, those who are in possession of unauthorised telecommunication equipment meant for consumer trade can be fined up to RM100,000 or jailed six months, or both.

In a separate charge, electronics equipment dealer Suzita Mohamad Salleh, 36, pleaded not guilty to illegal possession of 12 units of unauthorised STB decoders at her shop in Taman Bukit Dahlia in Pasir Gudang.

The items were seized during the same MCMC raid conducted at about 12.45pm also on Dec 6 last year.

Sessions court judge Muhammad Khalid Ab Kadir fixed bail at RM15,000 each for the two company directors. He fixed bail at RM5,000 with one surety for Suzita's case.

Both cases will be called for mention on Oct 25.

MCMC prosecuting officer Mohd Sophian Zakaria prosecuted, while the three people hauled to court were unrepresented.

It is learnt the case is the first court charge involving dealers in possession of STB decoders that did not bear the Scientific and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) certification.
