MELAKA: Police believe that the recent brutal attack of a man by several others in Melaka Raya, which went viral on social media, may be gang-related.
State police chief Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan said investigations revealed that the attackers and the victim might have been from rival groups.
“We suspect that Geng 24 was behind the incident that went viral (on social media),” he said at a press conference during the state police’s monthly assembly at their headquarters in Bukit Beruang here today.
Jalil said the victim and attackers were drunk.
“The cause of their fight was because they were drunk. If they had not been drunk, the fight would not have happened.”
He said the attack on Aug 15 at 2am was an isolated incident, as gangster activities in the state was under control.
“We want to prevent such things from happening, because when it goes viral on social media, it gives the impression that Melaka is not safe. This was an isolated incident.
“Gangsterism in Melaka is under control and we have always taken preventive measures.”
He added that the case was considered solved. The suspects will be charged in court and the video will be tendered as evidence.
Jalil issued a stern warning on rival gangs here, which might have been involved in a turf war.
“We have warned them not to continue with their plans as we are monitoring their activities.”
He added that police have a list of groups that were declared illegal by the Home Ministry.
“They are here, but they don’t dare expose themselves. But, we know that they are gang members,” he said.
Jalil declined to reveal the number of groups on the list.
“The active groups here are Geng 18, Geng 24 and Geng 36,” he sai
