RM250 fine for not separating wastes from June 1

GEORGE TOWN: A RM250 fine will be imposed on those found to have dumped recyclable materials with their general garbage from June 1.
Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary Yew Tung Seang said the fines are for those who fail to comply with the waste segregation at source policy.
"A grace period of one year was given for everyone to familiarise themselves with the policy.
"Random weekly checks will be conducted around Penang by MBPP under the Ops Kawal Selia Pengasingan Sisa," he said.
Yew urged the people to cooperate and separate their waste as the percentage of waste in Penang needed to be reduced in order to increase the lifespan of dumpsites.
Under the policy, residents of landed properties have to place their recyclables such as paper, plastic and aluminium containers beside the rubbish bin for collection on Saturday (2pm to 5pm on the island and 8am to 4pm on the mainland) by council lorries.
For high-rise communities, the joint management bodies or management corporations would handle the waste separation system.
Apartment management committees must also create a space for residents to dispose the materials and arrange for pickup with the recycling companies.
