Indian government seeking an Interpol Red Notice against Dr Zakir

India issues second arrest warrant for Zakir Naik

PETALING JAYA: A special court of India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) has issued a non-bailable warrant against controversial Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik (pic) for his alleged role in a terror case.
The Times of India reported that the agency told the court that Dr Zakir failed to appear before it even after three summonses were issued and it would need Interpol's help to bring him back to India.
The NIA had registered a case against him under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act last year.
The Indian government is also seeking an Interpol Red Notice against Dr Zakir, who is also Islamic Research Foundation president, to curb his movements out of Saudi Arabia where he is currently based.
Last week, another city court in India issued a non-bailable warrant against him in a case of money laundering.
The 51-year-old preacher left India last year, allegedly to evade arrest after some perpetrators of the Dhaka terror attack claimed they were inspired by him.
The NIA subsequently registered a case against him and some officials of his organisation for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion.
Dr Zakir was recently in Malaysia to receive an award bestowed upon him by right-wing Malay wing movement Perkasa.
He also possesses permanent resident (PR) status in Malaysia, which was given to him about five years ago.
