THE STAR

KOTA KINABALU: A 49-year-old man beat up his wife when he could not stand her constant orders to do household chores.

But Ramzi Opong will now spend a year in jail for the assault.

He pleaded guilty to causing hurt to his wife, aged 43, at 6.10pm on Dec 10 last year in a bathroom of their house at Kg Rampayan, Manggatal.

The accused was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, the incident occurred when Ramzi was unhappy that his wife was ordering him to do household chores.

He then punched her left arm, shoved her head against the wall and kicked her, causing her to fall.

She cried for help from her father, who lives next door, before fleeing the house.

She suffered swelling and bruises on her arm, head and had cuts on her knees.

She lodged a police report the following day on her husband’s violent behaviour.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie passed judgment after hearing the facts of the case and mitigation.

Insp Rasydan Jasni prosecuted.
