Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar has announced his decision to quit PAS after 34 years

Mahfuz quits PAS after 34 years

PETALING JAYA: Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar (pic) has announced his decision to quit PAS after 34 years with the party.

In a live video on Sunday afternoon, which was shared on the Amanah Kedah Facebook page, Mahfuz said he had been a PAS member since March 12, 1984.

"Today, I will send a letter to the PAS secretary-general in accordance with the party constitution to stop my PAS membership, effective 11.59pm on Dec 31, 2017," he said, holding up his membership card.

According to Mahfuz, the one-minute gap between his exit and midnight was intentional, to allow him to "take a deep breath" before stepping into the new year.

Mahfuz is believed to be estranged from his party colleagues, and often sides with Pakatan Harapan, which PAS has disassociated itself from.

In late October, PAS said that it had decided to drop Mahfuz as a candidate for the 14th general election.

Mahfuz has held the Pokok Sena seat for two terms.

Chef Wan buat laporan polis kenyataan disalah petik

 27 Dec 2017, 9:15 pm      27 Dec 2017, 10:00 pm

Kenyataan itu dimuatnaik bersama gambar baju tertera tulisan 'all I want for Christmas is a new prime minister' (permintaan saya pada Krismas kali ini adalah perdana menteri baru), yang disifatkannya sebagai melucukan.

SINGAPORE: A 56-year-old man who got into a fight with his son-in-law at a carpark in Hougang earlier this month has been arrested, the police told The Straits Times on Friday (Dec 29).

A video showing part of the fight, posted by Facebook user Kelvin Ho on Thursday, went viral. It has since garnered more than 60,000 views and nearly 1,200 shares.

The incident occurred at the open-air carpark of Block 644, Hougang Avenue 8, at 6.38pm on Dec 9.

The video shows a woman in red waving what appears to be a baseball bat. ST understands that she is the partner of the 56-year-old man.
The Straits Times understands that the man was in his vehicle at the carpark with the woman, when they saw his son-in-law.

The older man alighted from his vehicle and got into a dispute with his son-in-law. He allegedly hit the man with the bat and was filmed shouting in Cantonese: "I want to chop you."

The video shows the woman waving the bat around, but she is not seen actually hitting anyone with it. A group of people were also filmed at the carpark, but ST understands they are mostly passers-by and unrelated to the dispute.

A passer-by called the police, and the 56-year-old man was arrested that same day in relation to a case of voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.

Police investigations are ongoing. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) fined R6.4 millio

My EG Services fined RM6.4million for abusing dominant position

RAHMAT KHAIRULRIJAL
New Straits Times29 December 2017

KUALA LUMPUR: E-government services provider My E.G Services Bhd (MyEG) was fined more than RM6.4million for abusing its dominant position in the renewal of online foreign workers permit.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) meted out the decision after dismissing an appeal by MyEG and its subsidiary My E.G Commerce Sdn Bhd to set aside the decision of the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) on June last year which found the appelants infringing section 10 (2) of the Competition Act 2010.

In a statement, CAT presided by Tan Sri Haidar Mohd Nor said there were no compelling grounds for the tribunal to interfere with MyCC’s decision.

“We are in view that MyCC rightly held that the appellants had abused their dominant position and thus we affirm with MyCC’s decision and ordered the appellants to pay a penalties which include total penalty of RM2.2 million and a daily penalty of RM7,500 from 25 June 2016 to the date of CAT’s decision yesterday.

MyCC in a statement in June last year found that the appellant MyEG had violated the Competition Act 2010 by abusing its dominant position in harming competition in the downstream market in which MyEG Commerce is participating as an insurance agent for online foreign workers' permit renewal applications.

MyCC said MyEG had imposed different conditions to the very same transactions with its competitors which had harmed competition in the downstream market for the sale of mandatory insurances.

Its chief executive officer Datuk Abu Samah Shabudin added the commission was adamant to ensure that companies in a dominant position will not abuse their position as this could lead to a negative impact on consumers and the national economy as a whole.

“MyCC had previously investigated several dominant players such as Megasteel Sdn. Bhd., Giga Shipping Sdn. Bhd. and Nexus Mega Carriers Sdn. Bhd. in the steel and logistics industry respectively.

“Although not all of these investigations resulted in financial penalties being imposed on the said parties due to non-infringement of the Competition Act, the MyCC will continue, without fear or favour, to be vigilant in ensuring competition law is adhered to and will not hesitate to take firm action against those who violate the law,” he said.

He said the commission also would focusing and targeting companies who working hand-in-glove with cartel activities such as price fixing, setting trading conditions by way of rebates and discounts and market allocation and sharing.

“Some of the companies that were investigated by the MyCC for cartel activity include players from the aviation industry, ice manufacturing, logistics and sand traders,” he said. © New Straits Times Press

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has apologised for past mistakes made during his tenure as prime minister (Full Video of Speeches))

Dr M apologises for past mistakes

SHAH ALAM: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has apologised for past mistakes made during his tenure as prime minister.

"Before I end my speech, I would like to apologise if I have offended anyone.

"Like other human beings, I'm not alone in saying or doing wrong. Not just today, but for as long as I've been in politics.

"I apologise for all my past mistakes," said the Part Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) chairman in his speech at the party's annual general assembly (AGM) on Saturday.

"I usually call them 'garbage' and I won't apologise. They are even worse than our enemies ... they have betrayed the struggle that we have fought for the people," he said.

On the subject of maintaining unity within Pribumi, the former premier said that there was no place for significantly differing opinions and views among party members.

"There will be no place for such people in Pribumi. They must realise that their actions will only help Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak win the 14th general election," he said.

Pribumi has been rocked in recent months by the exit of a number of leaders who have cited dissatisfaction with the party's leadership.

Among those who have left Pribumi are founding members Anina Saadudin and Kamarulzaman Habibur Rahman as well as former party vice-president Datuk Hamidah Osman.

On seat allocations for the general election, Dr Mahathir said that party members must accept the fact that they would not be able to contest in every area they wanted.

"In many areas, candidates come from different parties in Pakatan Harapan. That's why we must work hard to give victory to other Opposition parties.

"If we don't support Pakatan candidates in other areas, don't hope that our candidates will get support from the other parties in the Opposition," he said.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for a gun attack on a Coptic Christian bookshop and church in Cairo that killed nine people.
The fanatic, armed with an assault rifle, 150 rounds of ammunition and a bomb, went on the rampage outside Mar Mina church in the capital before being shot himself as he tried to storm the building.
The terror group claimed responsibility for the atrocity through its Amaq news agency, which has been known to make false statements in the past.
Footage posted on social media appeared to show the bearded man wearing a bulky ammunition vest sprawled on a street, barely conscious, as people restrained his arms and then handcuffed him.
The gunman, already wanted over attacks on police, first targeted a Coptic owned bookshop killing two before moving on to the church and slaughtering seven more.
Dramatic footage captured a gunfight outside the church and shows what is believed to be the jihadist walking around with his assault rifle.
It comes in the wake of a series of massacres at Coptic Christian churches carried out by ISIS in recent years.

Pictures show pools of blood on the ground and bullet holes in the walls of the church in the aftermath of the gunfight.
There were conflicting reports from Egyptian officials as to whether the gunman had been killed or wounded. It was also reported that there were two assailants and that one had gone on the run before being captured.
The interior ministry said he killed two people when he opened fire on a store before heading to the church where he shot dead seven people including an officer.
Police later cordoned off the crime scene as onlookers crowded around the church, while a forensics team combed the area.
Friday's attack came ahead of Christmas for the Copts, who celebrate it on January 7.

5 people were wounded in the attack including two women who are in a serious condition in hospital.
There have been numerous attacks on Coptic churches in recent years.
ISIS in Egypt has killed dozens of Christians in church bombings and shootings over the past year, and has threatened further attacks against the minority.
Samir Gerges, a witness, said people inside the church closed the gates when the shootout began but bullets from the gunfire still entered the building.
He said he was walking in a nearby street when the shooting happened. He saw people running and some of them went to hide from the gunfire inside a nearby restaurant.

Raouth Atta, 40, was attending prayers inside the church when the shooting took place.
'Once the gunfire was heard, the gates were closed immediately,' she said.
'People were terrified and wanted to check on their families in other buildings of the church. We stayed inside for 30 minutes before we were able to get out.'
Ms Atta said that once she was let outside the building she saw blood scattered everywhere.
Egypt's Coptic Christians make up about 10 per cent of the country's 93 million people, and are the largest religious minority in the region.

THE LATEST ATTACK ON EGYPT'S COPTIC CHRISTIAN MINORITY

Egypt's Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of its population, have come under attack by Islamist radicals several times over the past years.
With a new attack on Friday, when a gunman opened fire on a church south of Cairo and killed nine people, here is a timeline of the major incidents.
- 2017 -
May 26: Masked gunmen order Christians travelling to a desert monastery to get off their buses and recant their faith.
The group - a mix of visitors and workers heading to the Saint Samuel monastery south of Cairo - refuse and are shot one by one. About 30 people are killed.
ISIS claims responsibility.
- April 9: Two churches are bombed on Palm Sunday, killing 45 people. The attacks are in the cities of Tanta and Alexandria, where Coptic Pope Tawadros II had been leading a service. He is unharmed.
ISIS claims responsiblity and says both were suicide attacks.
- 2016 -
- December 11: A suicide attack during a Sunday service at the Saint Peter and Saint Paul church in central Cairo, adjacent to the headquarters of Pope Tawadros, kills 29. It is claimed by ISIS.
- 2013 -
- October 20: Four members of the same family, including two youngs girls, are gunned down by attackers on motorbikes as they leave Cairo's Church of the Virgin following a wedding.
It is the first attack targeting the capital's Coptic community since the army ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on July 3.
This follows attacks on dozens of churches, homes and businesses belonging to Copts after the bloody breaking up of two pro-Morsi gatherings in Cairo in August and with perceptions that Copts had backed his overthrow.
- 2011 -
- January 1: A blast kills 23 and wounds 79, mostly Christians, as they leave a Coptic church after New Year's mass in Alexandria.
A month later, ISIS gunmen shot dead about 30 Christians south of Cairo as they travelled to a monastery.
The jihadists are believed to have also carried out a massacre of Muslim worshippers in Sinai last month, killing more than 300 in an attack on a mosque associated with the mystical Sufi strand of Islam which IS views as heretical.
Egypt imposed a state of emergency following the church attacks and shootings, and President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi demanded the army quell the jihadists with 'brutal force' following the mosque massacre.
The group has been waging a deadly insurgency based in the Sinai peninsula bordering Israel and the Gaza Strip that has killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers.

They have increasingly targeted civilians as attacks on the security forces have become more difficult.
The army has poured in thousands of troops backed with armour and jets in a bid to crush the Sinai-based jihadists, but attacks have continued.
The attack on the church came a day after six Egyptian soldiers were killed in a roadside bombing in the Sinai.
Last week, ISIS claimed responsibility for firing an antitank missile at a helicopter in a North Sinai airport as the defence and interior ministers were visiting.
The attack killed an aide to the defence minister and a helicopter pilot, but both ministers returned to Cairo unscathed.
