Azalina: Govt will take over Hadi's Bill if approved in Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government will take over the tabling of the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 if the motion is approved in Parliament, said Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (pic).
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, who is Marang MP, would have to finish tabling his motion where it would be debated and voted on.
“The Government will then pick it up, there will be a statement (penyata) and the minister in charge will read it as a Government Bill (in Parliament),” she told reporters after attending the presidential speech at the 2016 Umno general assembly here Thursday.
Earlier, in his presidential speech, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Hadi’s Private Member's Bill would eventually be taken over by the Federal Government.
He urged all parties to stop politicising the issue and assured non-Muslims that the Government would conduct a thorough study on the proposals to empower the Syariah Courts to prevent any “dual punishment” system.
