KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has no plan to cut short the three-month trial for the traffic flow conversion at the intersection of Jalan Perak/Jalan P. Ramlee, where the five phase traffic light outside Shangri-La Hotel was changed to four effective yesterday.

Civil Engineering and Urban Transportation Department deputy director Steven Tan said changes in traffic flow was done to alleviate traffic woes at the stretch which was prone to major crawls.

“The change was done to ease the delay at the traffic light at the hotel, which will be significantly reduced now as it has been dismantled to a four phase traffic light,” Tan told the New Straits Times here today.

He however was unable to furnish details on the cut in waiting time as well as other traffic statistics as the department was still conducting studies on the system.

“Whether the move is here to stay or not will depend on the findings of the three month trial,” Tan said, adding that there were only two complaints registered so far since Monday.

He said no engagement were done before implementing the trial but stressed that it was among improvements suggested by the Special Task Force to Facilitate Business, under the Prime Minister's Department.

Tan said the issue of cars being banned from turning left into Jalan P. Ramlee towards Jalan Sultan Ismail was minor as the stretch was short.

“We banned the right turn from Jalan Tun Razak into Jalan Yap Kwan Seng before... that was more major, but people accepted it due to the ease in traffic,” added Tan.

Those with complaints can email the Civil Engineering and Urban Transportation Department at jkpb@dbkl.gov.my.
