KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 — Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz has said he will head a movement within Umno to call for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's suspension if the party Number Two refuses to desist in his campaign against their chief Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Nazri, who is an Umno supreme council member, said he was giving Muhyiddin one last chance to stop his criticisms against the party president, adding that the Pagoh MP should resign from his post if he could no longer "support" Najib.

"This is a final warning, Muhyiddin is misbehaving and we cannot go on like this.

"If he cannot be a team player and still continues attacking the president, I will move a proposal at the next Umno supreme council meeting to get him suspended as deputy president," Nazri told Malay Mail Online when contacted yesterday.

"As a normal member you can criticise the party leadership, but not as deputy president because the party constitution states that you have to assist the president to the best of your abilities," he added.

The Padang Rengas MP said Muhyiddin should stop thinking of himself as a "God-sent" leader to Malaysia, and claimed many party members disliked him because of his arrogance.

"Don't be too cock sure that you are strong, the Umno delegates who voted for you in the past did not show any concern when you were dropped as deputy prime minister.

"I am one of them. The truth is that Muhyiddin has not functioned as the deputy president we elected and hoped for," Nazri said.

Muhyiddin has challenged Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor to take action against him for criticising the party's leadership, saying that he only had Umno's interests at heart.

Yesterday, Malay daily Sinar Harian cited the Umno deputy president saying he had received many threats from many party leaders recently, including Tengku Adnan, allegedly for trying to smear Najib’s image.

Muhyiddin said his detractors must provide solid reasons if they wanted to remove him, and asked if his remarks have been “about destroying Umno or defending Umno”.

Muhyiddin was last year removed from his post as deputy prime minister in a federal Cabinet reshuffle, ostensibly over his criticism of the administration’s handling of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad controversy.

He was later barred from addressing delegates at the 69th Umno general assembly last year, despite having done so throughout his tenure as its deputy president.
