Brickfields police chief ACP Shahrul Othman Mansor said Szonert was released on the advice of the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) after a review of the investigation papers.

"The problem arose when the former husband (Crick) made a police report, whereas the Australian court had issued 'equal custody' of their son. It was due to dissatisfaction of the former husband, although the problem had been settled in Australia," he said in a statement today.

The DPP suggested that the two guardians sign a pledge of "equal custody" for their son at the Australian High Commission in Malaysia pursuant to the court order in Australia.

"Our priority at the moment is to ensure the child is given protection. We leave it to the lawyers from both sides to follow-up," said Shahrul.

Szonert was arrested when she surrendered herself at a police station in the city after Crick lodged a police report that she had abducted their son at a shopping mall on December 10. – Bernama, December
