Four drown in raft tragedy

SEGAMAT: A family outing of ten ended in tragedy when four of them died after their raft capsized in Sungai Bekok near Yong Peng on Saturday.
The dead were identified as Lana Ismail, 55, her nephew Aiman Haraddin, 10, and her two grandchildren Muhammad Iman Naqiudin Nas Izhar, 3, and Muhammad Ikhwan Nasaruddin Nas Izhar who is 10-month-old.
All four of the victims have been recovered. Six of the family members survived the incident.
The tragedy took place on Boxing Day at around 3pm when they were crossing the 50m wide river next to the Yong Peng mosque to visit a goat farm.
Batu Pahat OCPD Deputy Chief Supt Mender Singh said the initial investigation showed that the raft capsized as it reached the middle of the river because of the strong currents.
He said the family had attended a wedding ceremony earlier at Taman JPN Yong Peng before deciding to visit the goat farm.
The family members who waited at the scene were too distraught to talk to reporters.
