Jamie Vardy scores in 11th straight Premier League game to set new record as Leicester attacker admits: 'I got a bit carried away with myself' celebrating milestone strike

  • Jamie Vardy put Leicester ahead against Manchester United to set a new Premier League record on Saturday
  • Striker drilled past David de Gea to score historic goal and eclipse Ruud van Nistelrooy's tally in 10 straight games
  • 28-year-old began his incredible run of scoring in the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth back on August 29
  • Van Nistelrooy was quick to congratulate the striker on Twitter for having overtaken him in the scoring charts
  • Vardy will look to set a new all-time record of goals in consecutive league games set by Jimmy Dunne in the 1930s
Jamie Vardy wrote his name into the Premier League record books, with the Leicester striker's opener in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United the 11th consecutive game in which he has found the target.
Vardy latched onto Christian Fuchs' pinpoint ball down the channel to beat David de Gea with a rifled shot across goal to give Claudio Ranieri's side the lead after 24 minutes at the King Power Stadium.
It was the 28-year-old's 13th goal in 11 Premier League appearances - his 14th in total for the season - and the former Fleetwood Town striker will now set his sights on eclipsing Jimmy Dunne's record of scoring in 12 consecutive games in the 1930s with Sheffield United.

Van Nistelrooy took to social media to heap praise on the forward for having overtaken him as the League's new record holder, with the Dutchman posting on Instagram: 'Well done @vardy7! You're number one now and you deserved it. #11inarow.'
Speaking after breaking the record during Saturday evening's draw, Vardy said: ‘Yeah I’m obviously delighted but the main thing was the performance. I think we’ve put a very good shift in today and in the end a point was a fair result.
‘We’ve got a lot of pace in the team and counter-attacking is a big advantage for us. If we can break as quick as we have straight from a corner to getting a goal obviously it’s going to benefit the team.
‘Yeah it’s unbelievable, I think I got a bit carried away with myself. I don’t think I can repeat it to be honest. (celebration

‘If I let it get to my head it affects my performance so I’ve just been keeping my head down and concentrate. It’s just another game we want to get three points in.
Vardy kick-started his run with a penalty against newly-promoted opposition in the shape of Bournemouth. Leicester had narrowly avoided relegation the previous season and were expecting another fight against the drop at this stage, with the striker's 86th-minute penalty rescuing a point in the 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium.
In the second match of his goalscoring streak, Leicester found themselves two goals down against Aston Villa after 72 minutes but he scored the equaliser on the way to a brilliant comeback win. In the 82nd minute, Vardy charged into the box to stab home Danny Drinkwater's low cross.
In the third gameweek, he scored another equalising goal in a magnificent Foxes fightback. Vardy showed pace, power and all his scrapping spirit to latch on to a long ball and slide the ball into the far corner.

The former Sheffield Wednesday trainee scored two goals in a losing cause against Arsenal in match four, but Vardy displayed all his class in giving Leicester an early lead. Controlling a cross-field ball on his head at searing pace, he ran down the left flank before curling home.
By the time the Foxes travelled to face Norwich on October 3 he was on a roll, moving his side into the top four thanks to yet more poacher instincts. The striker won a penalty after inducing a foul from Sebastien Bassong and then converted the penalty for Leicester's opening goal.
Yet another equaliser came in a fightback from two goals down against Southampton the following week to make it a sixth successive game in which he had scored. Vardy also grabbed the first with a header but the second was calmness personified, smashing in the last chance of the game in the final minute.

The England striker added yet another goal that delivered crucial points against Crystal Palace, pouncing after Brede Hangeland's awful mistake, running on to a through ball, lifting it over onrushing keeper Wayne Hennessey and slotting into the empty net.
On Halloween, Vardy scored his side's third against West Brom in what proved to be a crucial contribution at The Hawthorns. Vardy received the ball on halfway, before laying it off, spinning in behind the high defensive line and latching onto a return pass to score.
Game number nine came against Watford at the King Power, and naturally Vardy was involved in the winner. Controlling a long ball over his shoulder with a perfect cushioned touch, he embarrassed keeper Heurelho Gomes to draw a foul in the box, and thumped the ball home to put the game out of the visitors' reach.

The scene for his 12th goal in this incredible run came coincidentally at the same venue where Van Nistelrooy set the record in 2003, with Leicester's comfortable 3-0 win over Newcastle starting with Vardy's opener on the stroke of half-time.
Moussa Sissoko barely had time to blink let alone move his feet as Vardy latched on to Leonardo Ulloa's pass, showed his opponent one way then shifted the other before scoring.
And despite Bastian Schweinsteiger levelling for the Red Devils in first-half stoppage-time on Saturday evening, the game will forever be remembered most fondly for the moment Vardy broke the Premier League's record for goals in consecutive matches, with Jimmy Dunne's all-time record of scoring in 12 straight games for Sheffield United in the 1931-32 season the next milestone on his radar.
Vardy's momentous strike against Louis van Gaal's side caps a quite incredible turnaround for a player now attracting interest from a clutch of big clubs heading into the January transfer window - having played non-League football just three years ago for Fleetwood following a spell with Halifax Town.
