Two teenagers fined for rioting at Wangsa Walk

KUALA LUMPUR: Two teenage boys were each fined RM700 by the magistrate's court on Monday after they pleaded guilty to rioting using items such as a piece of wood and iron in a fight at the Wangsa Walk Mall, here, in July.
Magistrate Saifulakmal Said also ordered the two boys aged 15 and 14 respectively, to be jailed for one week each if they failed to pay the fine.
Saifulakmal passed the sentence after considering the probation reports read out by a Social Welfare Department (JKM) officer at the closed proceeding in court, which was also attended by family members of the two accused.
The court also imposed the condition that the two boys must report to the Gombak JKM office once a month and to attend an interactive workshop organised by the department, and not to go out of their house without permission between 8pm and 6am.
The court also set Oct 9 for mention of the case involving their friend aged 15 years, who is also facing the same charge but his probation report was not ready yet.
The three were charged together with 16 others still at large with rioting using pieces of wood, a fork lock, yellow metal signboard, iron rod and crash helmets at the Wangsa Walk Mall in Wangsa Maju at 6.45pm on July 20, this year.
They were charged under Section 148 of the Penal Code and the offence is also punishable under Section 9(1)(d) of the Child Act 2001.
In the same court, a 17-year-old boy was fined RM800 or sentenced to two months' jail in default after he pleaded guilty to injuring a 16-year-old at the mall's security office at 6.50pm on the same day.
The court also imposed similar additional conditions on the accused, besides having to do community service work for 50 hours within a 12-month period.
DPP Raihanah Abd Razak appeared for the prosecution in the cases.
The media had reported that the fight broke out at Wangsa Walk when someone wanted to his break his younger sister's relationship with a guy.
The fight drew public attention when it went viral on social media. - Bernama
