Tesco takes action after travelator incident

PETALING JAYA: Tesco Malaysia has ordered all its stores to step up on the frequency of maintenance of lifts, travelators and escalators following an incident at its Rawang store.
“Following that, we have conducted preventive maintenance on all lifts, escalators and travelators in our stores,” Tesco Malaysia’s government relations and corporate affairs director Datuk Azlam Shah Alias said.
“We’ve also increased our scheduled maintenance from once a month to once a week,” he said.
Azlam was commenting on the incident where a customer fell down with her shopping cart when a pallet collapsed and created a 10-inch gap in a travelator on Wednesday.
He said Nur Zalina, 50, who sought medical treatment after the fall, did not suffer any injuries.
“We have offered assistance to her (Zalina) but she has yet to accept it,” Azlam toldThe Star through an email.
Malaysian Lift and Escalators Association (Malea) president Franky Ho Kai Fatt said that maintenance was important and advised owners to work together with the manufacturers.
“Some owners get different companies than the manufacturers for maintenance work but it should be carried out by the manufacturers,” said Ho.
He said maintenance should be done monthly.
“There must be a compulsory checking every three months.”
