Malaysian champions Johor Darul Ta'zim's JDThopes of making the final of the AFC Cup still alive despite a 3-1 defeat at the home of Al Qadsia

Amri Yahyah Wonder Goal Gives Malaysia's JDT Hope In AFC Cup Semi final

Malaysian champions Johor Darul Ta'zim's hopes of making the final of the AFC Cup are still alive despite a 3-1 defeat at the home of Al Qadsia at Kuwait Sports Club Stadium on Tuesday night.
With the Southern Tigers trailing 3-0 at the home of the tournament's defending champions, Malaysia international forward Amri Yahyah grabbed a lifeline with a vital away goal that came courtesy of a luscious, long-range lob.
It was a dominant performance from Al Qadsia and there were warning signs for the visitors before the deadlock was broken after 32 minutes.
A swinging corner from the impressive Bader Al Mutawa, who had a 2012 trial with Nottingham Forest, was headed home in simple fashion by Doris Fuakuputo. He had hit the bar from a similar set piece just minutes before.
Four minutes before the break, it got a lot worse for the big spending Malaysian outfit. There were few protests when Mohamad Aidil Zafuan stuck out a leg in the area to trip Al Mutawa to concede a penalty. There was even less surprise when the legendary Kuwaiti international, who recently announced his retirement from the national team, dispatched the spot kick with ease.
JDT were a little more aggressive after the restart bit were still struggling to create chances.
The tie looked dead and buried in the 55th minute when Seydouba Soumah made it 3-0 in emphatic fashion. The Guinean international collected the ball just outside the area and let fly with a fierce right-foot shot that slammed into the top right corner of the Johor net past the despairing dive off Izham Tarmizi. It was looking all too easy for the 16-time Kuwaiti champions.
Yet the best goal came from the Malaysians with eight minutes remaining. Leandro Velazquaz turned and passed just inside the Kuwaiti half and freed Yahya. The substitute spotted Ahmad Al Fahdli off his line and, hitting the ball first time, lobbed the goalkeeper from 30 yards.
"To be honest, things would have been good if the result was 2-1, but now it is very hard as the result is big," Johor coach Mario Gomez told reporters after the game.
"In the second leg, we have to score two goals but we will rely on our supporters to have a good result.
"If the match finished with a 3-0 win for Qadsia, then it would have been harder but the goal that we scored will give us a chance. We will try our best in the second leg."
The spectacular strike not only sparked wild celebrations among the small pocket of visiting fans, it gives Johor hope for the second leg back home on Oct. 19 in front of what should be a much bigger and more passionate crowd. This tie is not over yet.

A Form Five student was shocked when a girl he had recently befriended blackmailed him and threatened to post his naked video on social media, Guang Ming Daily reported.
The student from Selayang, known only as Lim, claimed that he received a Facebook message from a girl known as Camille YY at around 8am on Monday.
“She claimed that she was a 19-year-old Filipina, who resides in Singapore,” he said.
He said he started to chat with her in Facebook and later the girl requested to continue chatting in Skype.
“After a while, the girl said she wanted some entertainment and took off her clothes in front of the webcam and invited me to strip,” he said.
He said he received a video after they finished the video call, and the girl asked him to pay RM1,500, or the video would be uploaded on YouTube.
“I negotiated with her and finally the amount was reduced to RM500, and I kept receiving messages reminding me to make the payment.
“I was afraid and I told my father about the incident.
“He later brought me to the police station to lodge a police report,” Lim said.

BUTTERWORTH: A couple was stunned as four robbers coolly walked away with gems worth RM600,000 in a daring daylight robbery at their shop in Medan Kurau 1, Taman Chai Leng.
One of the robbers who was brandishing two pistols even fired a warning shot before fleeing the scene in the 11.34am incident yesterday.
Owner Lim Kheng Lin said she and her husband Ng Weng Keng, both 53, watched the entire two-minute robbery from inside the room behind the display shelves.
“Three men wearing full-face helmets and black jackets walked in but they couldn’t see us.
“Two of them started breaking the glass panels using hammers. They then placed all the jewellery into a bag.

“Another robber was standing guard outside armed with two guns.
“It was all over in less than two minutes,” she said.
“We have been doing business here for the past 18 years and this is the first time we’ve been robbed.
“They took almost everything including gold necklaces, rings and bracelets.”
Lim’s daughter who wanted to be known only as Ng, 24, said she was outside and saw the robbers arriving at her parents’ shop.
“I just returned from a vacation in Australia a few days ago and was distributing souvenirs to neighbouring shops when the incident happened.
A robber, brandishing two guns, fires a warning shot and then points a gun at passers-by before escaping with an accomplice after robbing a jewellery shop in Chai Leng Park in Prai, Penang. They and two others escaped with RM600,000 worth of jewellery on two motorcycles. The heist was over in less than two minutes.

“I immediately called the police. Before I could finish providing the address, the robbers had fled. I was so worried for my parents,” she said.
An eyewitness, Yong Hee Kong, 44, said he was warned to stay put by the armed robber.
“I heard loud noises of glass breaking, so I went outside to check.
“The robber standing beside two motorcycles then waved a gun at me, warning me to stay inside.
“There were many other traders during the incident but nobody dared to help,” he said.
Police sources said a man had been arrested over the robbery.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz said he had no intention to interfere in the affairs of Wisma Putra

Nazri: I made a mistake, had no intention to interfere

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz (pic) said he had no intention to interfere in the affairs of Wisma Putra after the Chinese ambassador was summoned over remarks made during a visit to Petaling Street.
In admitting his mistake, the Tourism and Culture Minister said that he told Dr Huang Huikang not to worry because the usual practice was for the foreign minister to summon an ambassador, and not the deputy minister.
“The normal practice in cabinet when one minister is not in the country, only another minister can act on his behalf, not his own deputy minister,’ Nazri told theStar Online Tuesday in a text message from Turkey.
Nazri added that this was the reason he thought that the Foreign Ministry did not make a decision to summon Dr Huang as Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
“I thought our foreign minister will call the ambassador himself when he comes back because that is within his power and proper but not his deputy. Obviously, I am mistaken and did not know that the foreign minister has instructed his deputy,” he said.
Nazri had reportedly taken Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican to task for calling in Dr Huang over remarks made by the diplomat during a visit to Petaling Street on Friday.
Anifah said that it was regrettable that several Cabinet ministers had issued press statements and taken action without referring to him first.
He also said the matter could have been solved well by Wisma Putra without the interference of other ministers.
Nazri said that as a minister for 16 years who had previously covered the foreign minister many times on requests, he came to a conclusion that only a minister can act on behalf of Wisma Putra, which is strict on protocol.
“Certainly now that is all changed and I am not aware but one thing is sure, I’m a very experienced minister and interfering is certainly not my intention,” he added.
Dr Huang had a meeting with acting Foreign Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin on Monday.

Sunway Group expects its prized Sunway Lagoon theme park to attract 2 million visitors next year with opening of RM100mil Nickelodeon attraction

Sunway to draw more visitors with new attraction

      Tuesday, 29 September 2015

Sunway Lagoon theme park is expected to attract two million visitors next year with the opening of an RM100mil Nickelodeon attraction scheduled for the last quarter of this year. The Sunway Group will not only be adding more hotel rooms in the vicinity of Sunway Lagoon but also expanding the Sunway Pyramid mall with an additional 100,000 sq ft of space for an investment of RM10mil under its phase 3 extension.

PETALING JAYA: Sunway Group expects its prized Sunway Lagoon theme park to attract two million visitors next year with the opening of an RM100mil Nickelodeon attraction scheduled for the last quarter of this year.

Sunway Lagoon, which has been a huge driver for the group and its hotel and shopping centre around the theme park, is estimated to attract 1.5 million visitors this year.

The success of Sunway Lagoon has seen not only the size and number of attractions at the theme park increase over the years, but has also allowed the group to capitalise on its accomplishments.

To meet the additional number of visitors, the Sunway Group will be launching a 401-room hotel to complement its existing 550-room Sunway Pyramid Tower East Hotel.

Sunway Pyramid Tower West would cost RM300mil, said Sunway Shopping Malls & Theme Parks (which is part of the Sunway Group) chief executive officer H.C. Chan in an interview with StarBiz. Both will be four-star hotels.

“The new hotel is part of the group’s asset-enhancement programme,” said Chan.

Currently, Pyramid Tower East and the adjacent Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa have a total of 1,250 rooms. The completion of the new hotel by the end of this year will give the group a total of 1,700 rooms.

On the oversupply of hotel rooms in the Klang Valley, Chan said the additional 400 rooms would be “easily absorbed”.

He said the additional rooms would “fit into the group’s plan for the hotel business to leverage on the Sunway Lagoon theme park”.

The group will not only be adding more hotel rooms in the vicinity of Sunway Lagoon but also expanding the Sunway Pyramid mall with an additional 100,000 sq ft of space for an investment of RM10mil under its phase 3 extension, said Chan.

He said phase 4 would see an additional 500,000 sq ft of net lettable area (NLA), for an investment of RM500mil.

The Sphinx-head Pyramid mall currently has NLA of 1.6 million sq ft and is the group’s key earnings driver, said AllianceDBS Research in an August report.

The group has injected Sunway Pyramid and Sunway Carnival into Sunway Real Estate Investment Trust (Sunway REIT).

Although Sunway REIT has a diversified portfolio of 14 assets, it derives 60% of its income from the Egyptian-themed mall.

Khir Toyo jailed for one year

PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court upheld the one-year jail term for Selangor mentri besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo for corruption.
Chief Judge of Malaya Justice Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin, who chaired the five-man panel, made the order on the grounds that Dr Khir had committed a crime within his knowledge as a public servant for obtaining for himself and his wife two plots of land and a bungalow in Shah Alam.
Justice Zulkefli also rejected the mitigation by defence counsel Tan Sri Shafee Abdullah for Dr Khir to provide free dental service to the poor in lieu of jail term.
He said this was only meant for light offences.
Other judges on the panel were Justices Ahmad Maarop, Hasan Lah, Jeffrey Tan Kok Wha and Ramly Ali.
On Sept 22, the same panel convicted Dr Khir after dismissing his appeal to set aside his conviction.
He was charged with obtaining for himself and his wife two lots of land and a bungalow at Lots 8 & 10, Jalan Suasa 7/1L, Shah Alam, through Ditamas Sdn Bhd director Shamsuddin Hayroni.
The land and house were bought at RM3.5mil, in contrast to the price of RM6.5mil paid for it by Ditamas on Dec 23, 2004.
Dr Khir committed the offence knowing that Shamsuddin had dealings with him in his official capacity as mentri besar at the time.
On May 30 last year, the Court of Appeal rejected Dr Khir’s appeal against his conviction and upheld the court order for him to forfeit ownership of the property and hand it over to the government.

        THE STAR

KUALA LUMPUR: Four of eight men charged with the abduction and murder of Deputy Public Prosecutor Anthony Kevin Morais are from the same area – Kulim in Kedah.

Six of the eight were charged with murder and two with abetting the murder. All face the death penalty.

Looking scruffy and unshaven, army pathologist Kol Dr R. Kunaseegaran, 52 , was charged in the magistrate’s court here with abetting the murder.

College student S. Nimalan, 22, moneylender S. Ravi Chandaran, 44, G. Gunasekaran, 47, R. Dinishwaran, 23, M. Vishwanath, 25 and A. Thinesh Kumar, 22, were all charged with murder at the same court.

They were alleged to have committed the crime between 7am and 9pm between Jalan Dutamas Raya, Sentul and Jalan USJ1/6D Subang Jaya on Sept 4.

In the dock: Dr Kunaseegaran (right) and six others were charged in the KL magistrate’s court.

At the Petaling Jaya magistrate’s court, mechanic A. Murugan, 44, was charged with abetment of the crime at No 20, Desa Mentari here between 9.30am and 8pm on Sept 4.

According to the charge sheet, security guard Viswanath’s last known address is at Taman Desa Karangan, Sungai Karangan near Kulim, Dinishwaran’s last known address is Batu Pekaka Estate near Kuala Ketil not far from Kulim while Nimalan and jobless Thinesh are also from Kulim.

Police sources said that while the four were not from a gang, they were all from the same area.

The accused in the KL court nodded when the charges were read to them. No plea was taken.

The prosecution team, comprising DPPs Datuk Abdul Razak, Manoj Kurup and Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar requested for the case to be mentioned in November considering the time needed for post-mortem and chemist reports to be ready

Magistrate Siti Radziah Kamarudin fixed Nov 30 for mention.

Mechanic A. Murugan was charged in the Petaling Jaya magistrate’s court.

Datuk N. Sivananthan and Datuk Geethan Ram Vincent represented Dr Kunaseegaran while M. Manoharan appeared for Dinishwaran.

The other accused were not represented.

Americk Sidhu held a watching brief for Charles Suresh Morais and Datuk Richard Morais, brothers of the slain DPP.

Morais went missing on Sept 4 after leaving his residence in Menara Duta to head for work in Putrajaya in a grey Proton Perdana.

Closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) recordings taken in Jalan Dutamas showed his car being rammed by another vehicle in rush hour traffic.

When Morais came out of his car, four men from the other vehicle came out and grabbed him. They then bundled him into their car

One of the suspects arrested in connection to the case led police to a swamp in USJ1, Subang Jaya where a body was found in a concrete-filled oil drum.

DNA tests on the remains matched that of Morais.

Outside the packed courtroom yesterday, the murdered DPP’s youngest brother Richard praised the authorities for the investigations and arrests.

“Everybody has done a good job. That’s all I can say.

“Now we have left it in the hands of the court,” he said.

7 strays that were culled tested positive for rabies and one of them had bitten five people before it was put down

        More rabid dog bite cases

KANGAR: Seven strays that were culled tested positive for rabies and one of them had bitten five people before it was put down, said Perlis Veterinary Services Department director Dr Shaharul Akmar Talib.
He said that of 35 dog bite cases since the culling began, 13 were by rabid dogs.
“We have culled 298 strays so far. Like other states, dog lovers in Perlis are also against culling but we continuously let the people know how deadly rabies can be.
“Those bitten by rabid dogs would understand how dangerous it is,” he said.
Kedah Veterinary Services Department director Dr Kamaliah Ghazali could not be reached for an update.
However, it is believed that about 500 strays have been put down in Kedah.
It was previously reported that of the 18 dog bite cases in Kedah, two were by rabid animals.
Bernama reports that the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority in Singapore will impose new measures and temporary restrictions on the import of dogs and cats from Malaysia with immediate effect.
In its letter to pet agents posted on its website, AVA noted that cases of rabies were detected in dogs in Perlis, Kedah and Penang.
It said the initial cases were reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health on Aug 24.
For personal imports by pet owners wishing to bring their dogs and cats from Malaysia, imports would be allowed on condition that they meet the veterinary conditions as scheduled under Category D countries.
For personal imports of dogs and cats, Malaysia has been re-categorised from Category C (countries with controlled risk or low incidence of rabies) to Category “D”, which is countries with undetermined risk of rabies.
Category “D” means personal imports will face stricter pre-import rabies vaccination requirements.
Personal imports will also face longer post-arrival quarantine periods in the republic.
No import of commercial consignments for dogs and cats from Malaysia will be allowed at this juncture, AVA said.

Drug addict shot in botched robbery near Bandar Sunway

PETALING JAYA: A suspect was accidentally shot in a botched robbery by his gang member after the victim put up a fight outside Mentari Court near Bandar Sunway.
Police said the victim was walking to his car at the complex parking lot, with a slingbag around his shoulder, when four young men pulled up in a Perodua Viva next to him at about 7.45pm Monday.
One of the men pointed a gun at the victim's stomach and demanded that he hand over his gold ring and the bag.
Instead, the victim put up a fight as he was handing over the bag.
"The victim grabbed the suspect's hand with the gun and a struggle ensued. Then another suspect in the car tried to help but ended up getting shot in the right thigh," said Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Azmi Abu Kassim.

The gunfire from the pistol prompted the four suspects to scurry away. Police later arrested the injured suspect shortly after the incident.
"He is being treated at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). He is a 22-year-old drug addict and has done time in jail. We have identified his friends and are looking for them," said ACP Azmi.
He said police also seized the gun used during the botched robbery - a black China-made Norinco - with only three bullets left in the magazine.
