KUALA LUMPUR: A bank officer screamed in shock after she was allegedly molested by a man at the Masjid Jamek LRT station last week.
One week later, based on her description of the man and a vast CCTV network along the LRT line, the suspect was tracked down by security personnel and handed over to the police.
Security head Zainal Rashid Adnan of Prasarana Malaysia, which operates the LRT, said the woman lodged a police report claiming that the man fondled her right breast while she was waiting at the LRT station on July 15.
“On July 22, our team spotted the suspect at KL Sentral station at our ticket vending machine,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He said the man, who was in his 20s, was arrested and handed over to the Jalan Travers police station.
“Prasarana views this incident and other criminal acts very seriously.
“We hope this will be a reminder to all to not act indecently onboard all our trains, buses and at our stations as our facilities are equipped with CCTVs including on board our trains and buses,” he said.
Although there were CCTVs monitoring the facilities, he said commuters should be vigilant at all times when they were in public places.
“I would also like to advise our commuters to approach our security personnel when they encounter improper and unlawful acts by other commuters and alert us of any suspicious incidents and individuals in our premises.
“Even if you need our security personnel to escort you to parking lots at night, we will assist you. Feel free to approach our counters and our security personnel,” he added.
Prasarana manages more than 900,000 commuters daily in the Klang Valley and Selangor via Rapid KL buses, LRTs and the KL Monorail.
When contacted, City CID chief Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad confirmed the arrest, saying that they were investigating the case for use of criminal force on a person with intent to outrage modesty.
“The suspect has been remanded to help in investigations,” he said.
