Ex-minister's pol-sec held over RM1mil fraud

PETALING JAYA: A former minister’s political secretary has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with the misappropriation of nearly RM1.1mil in three foundations.
The suspect, who is a Datuk, was arrested on Monday along with another individual, who is the director of one of the foundations headed by the Datuk.
“Both individuals, in their 30s and early 50s, will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Wednesday under the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust of over RM1.1mil and fraud involving a RM1mil fund,” said MACC investigations director Datuk Mustafar Ali, adding that both men have been released on RM50,000 bail.
He said the three foundations in question, which were established between the 1980s and 2011, were not registered as charitable organisations but were operating as companies with limited liability.
It was believed the money from these organisations were in conflict with the objectives of a foundation.
The suspects held the positions of director and trustee of the organisations respectively.
Meanwhile, the MACC added that another foundation director with a Datukship, was arrested for an offence under the Companies Act, which also involves one of the foundations in question.
