KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei underlined his supremacy as the King of the Super Series once again when he showed no mercy en route to winning his third Hong Kong Open title in Kowloon on Sunday.
Chong Wei, who turned 31 last month, crushed Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia 21-13, 21-19 in a 34-minute lop-sided men’s singles final. It was his ninth win, and possibly the easiest, in 14 meetings over Sony.
Chong Wei is now a proud owner of six Super Series titles out of 12 on the Tour this season, having won in Malaysia, South Korea, India, Indonesia and Japan. In 2010, Chong Wei also won half of the 12-leg Tour.
Sunday’s title was also Chong Wei’s 50th and his 34th in the Super Series – making him the most successful player since the series’ inception in 2007.
And, he is not done yet.
Chong Wei is now eyeing for title No. 7 at the BWF World Super Series Finals at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton (KLBA) Stadium from Dec 11-15.
“It is great to win here (against Sony). I have one more tournament to go - at home and I hope to win it as well,” said top qualifier Chong Wei, a three-time winner of the Finals from 2008-2010.
“This has been a great season for me. Next year will be even tougher but I am looking forward to the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games,” added Chong Wei, whose main disappointment this season was losing to Lin Dan of China in the final of the World Championships in Guangzhou in August.
National singles coach Rashid Sidek was happy that Chong Wei had not lost his touches nor his desire to win after skipping the China Open due to pain in his ankle.
“He was controlling all the way against Sony today and never slowed down although he had taken a huge lead in the second game (14-4 at one stage). With sheer speed and power, he continued to put pressure on Sony and deservingly won the title,” said Rashid.
“This is another great season for him and he continues to deliver titles after titles for the country. We are proud of him and we hope he will maintain this good form,” added Rashid.
Meanwhile, recently-married Chris Adcock-Gabrielle White of England defeated China’s Liu Cheng-Bao Yixin 21-14, 24-22 in the mixed doubles final for their first Super Series title.
