SUSPECTED DRUG TRAFFICKER SHOT IN PENANG

The victim, with a string of drug trafficking and possession offences, was found slumped in his driver seat with multiple bodily gunshots.
A check at the scene showed that the bullets penetrated the driver's side windscreen and hit the victim.
The windscreen shattered and a hole as big as a football appeared on it.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Gan Kong Meng said  Veerappan died from several fatal gunshot wounds on his neck.
"The victim halted his car near a traffic junction and two gunmen on a motorcycle rode from behind and stopped next to his vehicle.
"One of them drew out a pistol and fired at him repeatedly at close range and he died on-the-spot," Gan said at the scene.
A police spokesman said early investigations by the pathologist showed that the slained victim sustained at least 10 shots all over his body.

He added that the forensic team had recovered 14 bullet casings strewn on the road next to the car.

Gan said Veerapan was driving his friend's car which had been registered under a third party's name.

Meanwhile, Gan said the police would review the closed circuit television (CCTV) footage to help in investigations.

The victim's body was sent for a post mortem and his family members waited for three hours before claiming it from the Penang Hospital mortuary.

It was a grieving moment when they claimed the body.
They refused to speak to the press.

Earlier, in an unrelated incident elsewhere, over 20 gunshots were fired outside a luxurious bungalow in Jalan Utama.
A police spokesman said  the 1.15am incident jolted the family members from their sleep.

Six shots hit the the house's wall and another four shots hit the front window when the gunman opened fire. Four bullet casings were recovered inside and outside the bungalow's compound.

He said the house owner, who was abroad, had received six live bullets dropped in front of the house prior to the incident and lodged a police report for extortion.

"The owner was told via a text message to wire an undisclosed sum of money to a local bank account.
"He refused to do so and reported the threat to the police," the spokesman said.

He said the CCTV footage were blurred and the poor quality image failed to identify the gunman.
A check at the scene showed that the gunman fired random shots from various distance from the house.
